Endodontics - Root Canals

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is the dental process where a dentist gets rid of the infected, damaged or dead pulp from your tooth. When decay enters your tooth through deep cavities or flawed fillings, your tooth becomes abscessed causing pain and/or swelling. When the pulp/nerve of your tooth becomes infected, a successful root canal treatment can save your teeth from extraction.

The Root Canal procedure:

  • Your dentist will give you an injection of local anesthetic.
  • Your affected tooth will be isolated from the rest of your mouth.
  • The dentist will access into the pulp chamber and remove the infected pulp.
  • They will clean the empty pulp chamber and disinfect it with some medication.
  • The root canal will be filled and sealed with a material called gutta percha.
  • A permanent filling or crown will be placed to restore and protect your tooth.

Root canal treatment can be done in one or more visits. It depends on the situation.
